Meet IFBB Bikini Professional and Oxygen Magazine Cover Girl Shannah Baker! We caught up with the Perth-born athlete and model to find out what motivates her…
Tell us a bit about how you got started with body building and competing?
It was actually my husband who was the first person to encourage me into the gym and lifting weights! I started going to the gym around 2012 with absolutely no idea of what I was doing, I just went because I enjoyed it… I never thought it would turn into my career!
I have been training to compete since late 2013 & took to the stage in April 2014 for the very first time! Since then I have competed all over the world so I feel extremely lucky and grateful to be able to do so!
What has been your biggest achievement?
Winning my IFBB Bikini Professional Card/Status October 2016 was an absolute dream come true. Now I am able to travel the world doing what I love. Since turning Pro I have stepped on the Arnold Classic Australia stage not once but twice, which is a huge honour as this is invite only. So a quick mention to Tony Doherty who runs this show and has done amazing things for the federation and athletes in Australia.
What is your number 1 piece of advice?
Find a mentor or coach who is an absolute master of their trade! There are so many online coaches nowadays, filter through them, find someone with extremes amount of knowledge and experience; someone who believe in your vision. Remember what works for others might not work for you. Each person requires something different, we are all unique. The journey is tough. You have to be mentally strong, make sure you are ready to do this FOR YOU, and not for anyone else. But most of all, Stay true to yourself and your beliefs, stay grounded and humble.
What is your favourite form of exercise?
I love to lift weights in the gym. I enjoy some light cardio outdoors too.
What keeps you motivated?
The desire to one day be a champion, knowing I will always have room to evolve my physique and mentality as a athlete and to hopefully inspire others on the way. Being able to hear other people’s stories about how YOUR journey has helped theirs is truly humbling and a piece of what keeps me pushing to be better in all aspects of life.
What do you do to unwind?
Massages are my favourite way to unwind or relax… also Netflix with my husbands and two dogs!
Favourite Workout Song?
I wish I could choose one! Instead I have my own gym playlist on Spotify with almost 100 songs
Chocolate is number one! I am also a new found lover of strawberry and rhubarb crumble with ice cream! Yum! Pizza, bagels, donuts, Japanese food. I could go on and on!
